DAREAN AND THE GIRLS

MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHER • SAN ANTONIO, TX

It was late January when I was contacted by a beautiful lady named Darean through the Steph and Lady Facebook. Darean was interested in gathering information for a maternity shoot after a friend had recommended me! It is always the biggest compliment when I am able to meet people through recommendations. It was very quick to be able to find a date for us to have the shoot since winter months tend to be a little slow. Many people do not want to be outside during the cold or possible rain during January and February. However, Darean had a special session in mind to celebrate her 4th baby, and third baby girl! The girls were so excited to be meeting their sister in the next month! We had hoped that February 27th would have some nice cool weather, and some great back lighting.

Darean and I messaged each other back and forth leading up to the session to be able to see what exactly she was looking for in her pictures. Communication with my families is very important in deciding the location, clothing, and everything else that will make them feel comfortable. I like to give them an idea of what the day will look likes since many of them are having family pictures for the very first time. One of the first things that Darean asked me was if I had any special locations in mind. To me, it's important to have a location that really brought out the beautiful view of the Texas Hill Country. I always like to be able to have a dramatic landscape and skies to bring out authentic connections between the families. We decided on a location with all of these features in North San Antonio.

Another question that I am often asked is what I recommend to wear for the shoots. I use a great styling app to be able to show families the types of colors that will look best during golden hour. The styling app I use is a great tool for families to be able to look through clothes that they like and that I know will look great as well for the session. They often choose different clothing and then ask me what I think. At the end of the day, I always tell everyone to go for earthy tones because they look great in pictures, but the most important thing, above all is for them to feel comfortable! I can always make suggestions when I am asked what I think about wardrobe selections, but this is never more important than making sure that everyone is comfortable in what they wear. When everyone is comfortable in a session, you can see emotions and connections so much more clearly.

Darean was inspired by the boho look, so she chose to go with earth tone colors for all of them to wear. I really love how earth tone colors in clothing go so well together with nature and landscapes! I think these colors really bring out who I am photographing, and even more when I can have the perfect background to capture. I also loved how her dress had a slit up the side, so that you can see her leg. This really created a more intimate feel in the photos, and also makes her feel confident in something that feels and looks amazing. We also agreed for them to go barefoot in the photos so that they look more grounded in nature, and have even more connection between each other.

Maternity family sessions are special to my heart, and I love capturing the real authentic connections that exist between each of the families. There are very few special connections on this earth than those between families or mommas and their babies! I feel amazingly lucky to be able to capture these great moments of love and connection. This is truly one of the biggest reasons I became a photographer... to be able to capture love and true connection.
